Directed by Terence Young
I’m trying to separate the overwhelming feeling of disillusionment and disappointment I had when watching this in 2018 from the pure creative aspects of the film. I’m totally new to the James Bond universe and decided to start at the beginning with Dr. No.
The movie does a lot of cool things! I loved the intro scene with a number of shots near and around Bond playing poker without showing his face. This series of shots culminates in a close-up of the dapper Bond (Connery) delivering the world famous “Bond, James Bond.” line. The movie is rife with beautiful sets, amazing locations throughout Jamaica, excellent build-up and design of villain, memorable shots, out of this world theme, and the list goes on.
One note on the version of the film I saw: it was the Lowry 4k original film restored version which may include some clean-up or fixes to the original shots. Those have all been vetted by the content owner and are supposedly only to fix things like flickering lights but to those familiar with the original there may be some slight differences. This is my first time viewing, so as far as I’m concerned the picture was crisp and beautiful, tones consistent, etc.
